Sony 3D World Debacle

I’ve been holding back for several months on blogging about this particular story but after several good natured attempts at reaching a resolution I feel I have hit a brick wall.

For those of you who just want a summary – Sony did not supply the prizes that I & the other contestants won as outlined in their 3D World promotion and I’m asking for you to blog/email/facebook/tweet in order to help resolve this situation. Details at the bottom of this post.

The Long Prize Winning Story

In September 2010 my short 3D film, “FourPlay” was a runner up in a competition run by 3D World Magazine and Sony. The headline prize for the competition was to have your work included on a 3D blu-ray disc that Sony was going to distribute with 3D blu-ray players or 3D TVs. Secondary prizes included 3D TVs/Systems and blu-ray discs of “Sunny with a chance of Meatballs”. You can imagine the excitement of knowing your work could be potentially distributed to millions of viewers worldwide, what a scoop that would be for a small independent filmmaker.

So I put in way more hours than I’d care to admit, creating what I considered to be the best possible 3D animations that I could and a hopefully entertaining visual 3D feast! I was, and still am, very proud of the short that, apart from being a runner up in this competition, went on to be accepted for 3D film festivals worldwide.

There were some initial delays in judging the films but eventually about a month after scheduled Sony & 3D World announced the winning top ten films and “FourPlay” was up there in the runners up. Then it started.

Myself and several other contestants were regulars on the 3D World forum and it became increasingly obvious over the months that many of us were having problems getting hold of our prizes, never mind the elusive 3D blu-ray actually being created. After roughly six months I did receive a 3D enabled Sony Bravia TV, however the model supplied was not the one promoted as the prize, nor was it one “of equal value” as the competitions Terms & Conditions stated, it was in fact a 3D TV of around half the value. So far, so bad.

After several months further of waiting on news about the 3D blu-ray, and a few discussions with other competitors on the forum or email, I eventually approached a Sony representative of Sony Europe who was a contact listed for the promotion. After several attempts at getting hold of this individual it wasn’t until I threatened involving the UK Advertising Standards Authority that I actually got a response. They said that they would look into it and would get back to me as soon as possible. That was early May 2011. I am still unfortunately waiting. My emails remain unanswered, even those that included CC’ing a representative of the Advertising Standard Authority.

Can You Help?

I am currently in talks with Sony UK and would appreciate if you could hold off on any further email or facebook postings for the timebeing.

  1. Wow. I really didn’t expect that to happen. If I would I would be getting angry as well, I’ll try to help you.

  2. I am a winner of this competition too. I can,t believe that sony can treat us like this. If sony does not fulfil the prize advertised or give something of equal value soon. I will also be forced too go puplic with this, but in a bigger way.

I’m sure that alot of people would be very interested to read how a big company like sony runs its competition.

In the past when I’ve purchased electrical equipment. Sony would always be one of the brands I trusted and bought. Never in a million years would I ever of thought that entering a competiton run by sony would be con. We shouldn’t have to fight for a prize we have won. Its ridiculous.

  3. Reputable held in good repute; honorable; respectable; estimable: a reputable organization.

Sponsor (commercial), supporter of an event, activity, or person

A prize is an award to be given to a person or a group of people to recognise and reward actions or achievements

Sony, you have failed all of the above, you were once a reputable company held in high regard and you have failed to honour your commitment to the winners and runners up of Sony 3D World competition.

  4. Sony 3D World Competition Debacle

I support that Sony Should fulfill its obligations to the winners and deliver the prizes, or prizes of equal or greater value, as outlined by the 3D World/Sony Competition Terms & Conditions.

  5. Sony will step up but sometimes it takes awhile to get them to see the light. I had an issue with Sony and started a FB page “I HAVE A DEFECTIVE SONY TV”. Sony has assigned people to work the page and has replaced mine and thousands of other sets.
