First live 3D TV Broadcast in the UK from Sky
This weekend sees the broadcast of the first live 3d event in the UK. Sky are broadcasting the Arsenal vs Manchester United game live in 3d to selected pubs across the UK that have suitable viewing equipment installed.
Gerry O’Sullivan, Sky’s Director of Strategic Product Development, said: “2010 is the year for 3D TV. People have already embraced 3D cinema and because Sky’s 3D service uses the same kind of technology, we’re confident there will be demand for sport, movies, concerts and drama in 3D. The good news is that all Sky+HD customers already have the set-top box they need to enjoy 3D, meaning they simply need to buy any new 3D TV, all of which will work seamlessly with Sky’s ground breaking new service.”
Although this is not official there is chatter online that the venues showing the 3d football match are:
- Cardiff – The Blackweir Tavern (North Road)
- Dublin – Qbar (D’Olier Street)
- Edinburgh – Belushis (Market Street)
- London – Bar Kick (Shoreditch)
- London – The Elk Bar (Fulham)
- London – The George (Liverpool St)
- London – Sirocco ( Soho)
- Manchester – Binary Bar (Castlefield)
- Manchester – O’Sheas (Princess Street)
Sky has kitted out the bars with LG’s new 47-inch LD920 3D TVs that interestingly uses a passive 3D system with a polarised screen and requires the lower cost glasses as favoured by cinemas.

Free Stereoscopic Books from SD&A
The Stereoscopic Displays and Applications Virtual Library has three books relating to stereoscopic topics available for free to download from their site.
The books are:
- “Foundations of the Stereoscopic Cinema”
- “Three-Dimensional Photography”
- “The World of 3-D Movies”
Although the books do not necessarily cover state of the art subjects they are well worth a read for some perspective on the history of the medium.
