Avatar 3D Review – Roger Dean, Jar Jar Binks, Heaven’s Gate…NO WAY!

One should normally be sceptical of any praise that a 3D film receives from a 3D enthusiasts website – however I must admit to having genuine worries that with so much riding on this film with its profile of being the “make-or-break 3D movie”  for the entire new generation of 3D entertainment that I almost didn’t want to see it in case it let us all down. So I genuinely approached the furore surrounding Avatar with a healthy dose of scepticism.

With early trailers and sequences I had concerns that this looked a little too like some 1970’s Roger Dean album sleeves brought to life with Jar Jar Binks style characters – I wasn’t convinced that this was going to live up to the hype. With the 3D crowd so enthused and swooning over every new clip and trailer that James Cameron released I was all to ready for this to be a Heaven’s Gate moment.

However after seeing the film yesterday I must admit that my concerns were unfounded – this film is stunning! It’s emotionally engaging, beautifully realised and although a little thin and obvious on the plot side, it really managed to take me to another world for its two and three quarter hour running time.

The 3D effects are also fantastically realised: from the lush vegetation of Pandora, to the hulking battleships – it all plays out with stunning depth. The first views of night in the Pandora forest are particularly visually stunning – plants glowing with fluorescent colours while similarly dayglo insects flit about the forest. James Cameron hasn’t simply used the 3D in a gimmicky way that offends so many 3D critics, he has used it to add to the creative possibilities. On the few occasions that objects move into the negative parallax in front of the screen it’s not done in a tacky coming-at-ya way, it’s subtle and in context. It’s the way 3D should naturally be integrated contextually and the way all future 3d will be judged.

The CGI characters similarly don’t have problems typically seen in photorealistic animations; their faces have a level of emotion and believability that I’ve never previously seen in CGI characters. I did find their physical movement at times a little unbelievable – but in the scale of things that seems mean spirited to pick up on such minor issue.

There has been much written about the plot elsewhere so I’m not going to regurgitate it – suffice to say there were tears in my eyes on more than one occassion, so although this is a spectacular sci-fi epic, it’s one with a heart and soul that really engaged the viewer.

It’s been a long time coming so suit up and get to your local 3D Cinema for the intergalactic trip of a lifeltime. Avatar is fantastic!

3D Glasses on Amazon.co.uk

3D Plastic Framed GlassesI have to post this comment from a purchaser of some red blue anaglyph glasses I spotted on Amazon.co.uk.

The item for sale is a pair of Anaglyph Red-Blue glasses, I have to assume this is real but does seem too good to be true…

“I bought these glasses thinking that they would do exactly as they say. Simple fact is they are not 3D glasses they just make everything appear in red and blue. Absolutely rubbish, do not buy these.”

Awesome.
