Sony Stereo 3D Competition Update

3D World from SonySources from the 3D World Magazine & Sony 3D competition have noted via their forum that around 50 entries were received for the 3d short film competition. Entries came from all over the globe, including  Japan, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico and the UK. The good news is, as there are over 50 prizes up for grabs, everyone should get some prize to reward their efforts.

The original plan was to announce the winner at this week’s SIGGRAPH and to showcase the winners there, however the sheer volume of entries has delayed this. Steve from 3D World via the forum said that he expected the winners to be announced once they get back from LA. With SIGGRAPH closing at the end of this week hopefully that means everyone who entered should be hearing in early August.

First live 3D TV Broadcast in the UK from Sky

This weekend sees the broadcast of the first live 3d event in the UK. Sky are broadcasting the Arsenal vs Manchester United game live in 3d to selected pubs across the UK that have suitable viewing equipment installed.

Gerry O’Sullivan, Sky’s Director of Strategic Product Development, said: “2010 is the year for 3D TV. People have already embraced 3D cinema and because Sky’s 3D service uses the same kind of technology, we’re confident there will be demand for sport, movies, concerts and drama in 3D.  The good news is that all Sky+HD customers already have the set-top box they need to enjoy 3D, meaning they simply need to buy any new 3D TV, all of which will work seamlessly with Sky’s ground breaking new service.”

Although this is not official there is chatter online that the venues showing the 3d football match are:

  • Cardiff – The Blackweir Tavern (North Road)
  • Dublin – Qbar (D’Olier Street)
  • Edinburgh – Belushis (Market Street)
  • London – Bar Kick (Shoreditch)
  • London – The Elk Bar (Fulham)
  • London – The George (Liverpool St)
  • London – Sirocco ( Soho)
  • Manchester – Binary Bar (Castlefield)
  • Manchester – O’Sheas (Princess Street)

Sky has kitted out the bars with LG’s new 47-inch LD920 3D TVs that interestingly uses a passive 3D system with a polarised screen and requires the lower cost glasses as favoured by cinemas.

Multiple Stereo 3D TV Channels launching in 2010

As manufacturers demo their spanky new 3D TV hardware in CES this week, there’s fantastic news on the 3DTV content front with at least 5 providers announcing plans for 3D TV Channels launching over the coming months.

Discovery, Sony and IMAX are forming a joint venture to deliver a mix of 3D-friendly content, including natural history, space, exploration, adventure, engineering, science and technology, movies and children’s programming from Discovery, Sony Pictures, IMAX and other third-party providers.

Sky in the UK is launching a 3D Channel that will include movies, general entertainment and sports programming that will be delivered via the current generation of Sky HD boxes.

ESPN in the US has announced that it will be broadcasting 3D sports events from the date of the first World Cup Football match on 11th June with 85 3D broadcast scheduled in 2010.

DirecTV is launching three 3D channels from March this year covering sports, movies and documentary programming.

Next3D are also launching a broadband based 3D HD based channel offering a similar mix of stereoscopic 3D content, including 3D movies, films originally created for 3D IMAX, movie trailers, sports, news, documentaries, live 3D weather maps, and games.

This is the first time in Stereoscopic 3D’s admittedly shaky history that there is likely to be such a groundswell of content providers. Consider this along with the dramatic improvement in quality of how stereo 3D actually looks and the cutting edge technology that drives the new 3DHD hardware and the only conclusion can be that for the first time ever mass market 3D for the consumer market place is a viable proposition. The only question is will consumers buy it?
